Teaching jobs in government schools, colleges and universities are in huge demand these days owing to the good salaries, job security, job satisfaction etc. Every year lakhs of candidates appear for various government teaching exams with an aim to get recruited as a teacher or professor in a reputed government school or college.

There are two types of exams conducted to determine the eligibility of candidates for government teaching jobs in India:

•National Eligibility Test (NET)/State Eligibility Test (SET)

•Teacher Eligibility Test (TET)

NET for Assistant Professorship and/or JRF

NET is an exam conducted at national level to determine the eligibility of candidates for the post of Assistant Professor and/or the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Candidates qualifying the NET exam get eligible to apply for a government job in Indian universities and colleges as Assistant Professors. The candidates qualifying NET exam for JRF get eligible to pursue research in their chosen subject in Indian universities and colleges.

SET for Recruitment as Assistant Professor

The State Eligibility Tests (SETs) are similar to NETs, the only difference being these exams are conducted at state level. This means that candidates qualifying the SET exam get eligible to apply for the post of Assistant Professor or pursue research in the colleges and universities of a particular Indian state.

Note: While a majority of SETs are conducted for recruitment of Assistant Professors, Kerala SET is conducted for recruitment of school teachers.

TET for Recruitment as School Teachers in Classes 1-12

Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) is conducted at national or state level to determine the eligibility of candidates for the post of teacher in central or state schools from Classes 1-8. Some tests also determine the eligibility of candidates for Classes 9-12. Some of the popular TETs in India include:

• It is conducted by the Central Government as well as State Government. TET is one of the famous exams for teaching jobs in India and every year lakhs of candidates apply for this exam.

• It is mostly attempted by the female candidates because it is offering the secure and a prestigious job.

• Eligibility Criteria: The aspirant must have a B.ED degree to be eligible for the exam.

• TET is divided into two parts i. e level 1 and level 2 as given below:
  • Level 1: This exam is conducted for becoming a primary teacher (Class I to Class IV).
  • Level 2: This test is conducted for becoming a secondary teacher (Class VI to Class VIII).

Note: The popular TET Exams are – MAHA TET, HP TET, Assam TET, CTET, APTET, Bihar TET, TNET, UPTET, KTET.

Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET)

CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) is an entrance exam for aspirants eligible to teach in schools which comes under the central government of India.

• It is conducted by the CBSE (Central Board of School Education).
• It is a national level exam conducted twice a year.
• CTET exam was introduced by the Government of India to improve the standards of teaching.
• Eligibility Criteria: All Graduates are eligible to apply for the CTET entrance exam.
• Through CTET exam, aspirants will get jobs in schools of Central Government(KVS, NVS, Central Tibetan Schools etc.).
• Also in all the schools under the administrative control of Union Territories of Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and NCT of Delhi.
• the teacher will be appointed for classes 1 to 8

 

CTET July 2020 Important Dates 

 

 

PRT Exam Primary Teacher Exam 

Conducted by most of the states in India, for the recruitment of graduate teacher in state govt. schools.

Eligibility

Bachelor's degree with minimum 50% marks from a recognized university along with the degree of B. Ed./2 years Diploma (D. Ed.) from N.C.T.E/ Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).

 

PGT Post Graduate Teacher Exam 

conducted by most of the states in India, for the recruitment of graduate teacher in state govt. schools.

Candidates from any Graduate in any discipline with B.Ed degree from recognized university/institute/college may apply to PGT exam. Minimum age limit to appear in this exam is 21 years and there is no upper age limit for this exam. But it may be vary state wise.

You have to passed 2 year Post Graduate course from Regional NCERT College of Education in relevant subject with minimum 50% marks/ B.Ed or equivalent qualification/ Proficiency in Teaching in Hindi & English Languages.

 

TGT  Trained Graduate Teacher

TGT stands for Trained Graduate Teacher. It is not a course. It is a title given to a graduate who has completed training in teaching. So, TGT is a graduate who is trained in teaching. If you are a graduate and completed B.Ed then you are already a TGT and you don't need any teacher training to become a TGT.

TGT teachers are qualified to teach the students under class 10, including class 10 students. A graduate in any field of study is eligible for TGT entrance exam.

B.Ed Bachelor of Education

Bachelor of Education or B.Ed. is a 2-year undergraduate teaching program that is needed to become a teacher at pre-nursery, nursery, primary, secondary and senior secondary schools. For B.Ed. Admission 2021, students have to score an aggregate of 50-55% in graduation from a recognized university and qualify the required entrance exam.  

There are a number of entrance tests for B.Ed. Admission such as IPU CET, BHU UET, DU B.Ed., and others.

BTC Basic Training Certificate

 

Basic Training Certificate (BTC) Course helps one in becoming a teacher. Teaching is said to be an art, which can be gained by a series of activities.

The role of 21st century teachers is evolving everyday with technological revolution seeping into all spheres of life including education. The emphasis on early childhood education has given rise to the demand of skilled nursery or Montessori teachers.

Basic Training certificate (BTC) is two year diploma certificate program. The topics covered in the course include procedures and policies designed to train the aspirants.

The students pursuing the course are taught about teaching skills, attitudes and behaviors and other aspects that they need to know for the successful performance of their basic tasks.

B.Ed. Vs BTC

 

B.Ed. and BTC are courses that focus on teaching professions. The only difference between these courses is that the BTC course is more into primary teaching. M.Ed  Master of Education

MEd or Master of Education is a master degree course that deals with the study of new methods of teaching and educational research. The programme focuses on different aspects of education including instruction, curriculum, counselling, leadership, and educational technology. The regulatory body in charge of the MEd programme is the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE).

• MEd is of two years duration divided into four semesters. However, some universities/ colleges also offer a one-year duration MEd programme. The course is offered in various subjects and specialisations.
• Candidates can pursue MEd in distance education and regular mode. After the completion of the MEd course, candidates can choose to work not only as teachers but also as counsellors, administrators, headmasters, etc
