Setu Bharatam project

Setu Bharatam was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 4 March 2016 at a budget of 102 billion (US$1.4 billion), with an aim to make all national highways free of railway crossings by 2019.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today launched “Setu Bharatam” – an ambitious programme with an investment of Rs. 50,000 crore to build bridges for safe and seamless travel on National Highways.The programme aims at making all national highways Railway Level Crossing free by 2019.208 new “road over bridges / road under bridges” are envisaged for construction, while 1500 bridges will be widened, rehabilitated or replaced.

Project details

Under the project, as many as 208 rails over and under bridges (ROBs/RUBs) would be constructed at unmanned railway crossings on national highways and 1,500 dilapidated British-era bridges would be widened, rehabilitated or replaced in a phased manner at a cost of 208 billion (US$2.9 billion) and 300 billion (US$4.2 billion), respectively.

Setu Bharatam programme aims to make all National Highways free of railway level crossings by 2019. This is being done to prevent the frequent accidents and loss of lives at level crossings. 208 Railway Over Bridges (ROB)/Railway Under Bridges (RUB) will be built at the level crossings at a cost of ₹20,800 crore as part of the programme.

Mission

Development of National Highways (NHs) Network in the country into a road network of international standards for uninterrupted flow of traffic with enhanced safety features.

Enhanced connectivity for remote far flung and isolated areas, including North-East Region (NER), Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas including Tribal areas.

Evolving policies for efficient and safe transportation through the Road Network and facilitating their implementation.

Establish arrangements for review of Road Transport requirements keeping in view the long term perspective.

Evolve regulations for safer, fuel efficient and cleaner automobiles in alignment with international standards.

Improving road safety scenario in the country especially on National Highways.

Promoting IT for facilitating online services to the stakeholders

Strengthening public transport system.

 

Objectives of Setu Bharatam Yojana

To focus on the nationwide national Highways and to construct the bridges over national highways across the country.

To construct over 208 bridges or under bridges on the national highways across the country that will help in the removal of the railway crossings.

To map the bridges under the Bridge Management System as per the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to map 1,50,000 bridges across the country.

To revamp or rehabilitate 1500 existing bridges and give them new life.

To improve the quality of the bridges and reduce the number of accidents caused due to faulty construction of bridges.

Setting up a team that will be assigned to check and determine the quality of the bridges and give more focus to the upgradation of the bridges that have poor quality.

To provide or ensure ease of travel to the commuters by construction of bridges which will eventually result in reduction of traffic.

To make use of scientific methods and technologies in measuring the distance, latitude, longitude, come up with unique and sustainable design and materials, etc.
